Amid the recent persistent rainfall, two hikers lost their lives on Wednesday after falling into water in Baicheng county, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, while over 450 others have been rescued or sheltered, according to a notice issued by the local emergency management bureau on Friday.

The bureau said that at 10:26 am on July 30, authorities received a report that a hiker surnamed Chen had fallen into the water and gone missing approximately 20 kilometers from the southern exit of the Wusun Ancient Trail.

Rescuers from public security, emergency services, and fire departments located Chen's body at around 1:40 pm.

At approximately 9:40 pm, rescue personnel discovered a second body in the river about 4 kilometers from the southern exit. A preliminary investigation identified the victim as a male hiker surnamed Zhou, with evidence consistent with drowning.

Through July 31, rescuers safely evacuated 158 hikers. More hikers were securely housed at campsites and fire rescue stations along the trail with adequate supplies.

Authorities confirm all individuals have been accounted for. Investigations into the incident and subsequent arrangements are still underway.

Baicheng closed the Wusun Ancient Trail exits on July 30.

The ongoing rainfall along the trail area continues to cause rising river water levels. Given the complex geological environment of the ancient trail, authorities urge all hikers to strictly comply with safety management requirements, refrain from entering the area, and prioritize personal safety.

A temporary rescue service station has been established at the trail exit, operating 24/7 to provide assistance.
